World Heart Day 2010
"Healthy Heart at Work"
September 26th marks the 10-year milestone of World Heart Day. It is a very important day indeed, aimed at reminding us about the impact cardiovascular disease (CVD) has on our everyday lives. CVD claims about 17.1 millions lives around the world each year, making it the deadliest health condition worldwide.
According to the Ministry of Health (MoH), cardiovascular diseases were the number one killer in a survey conducted in hospitals, contributing to 16.5% of all deaths in 2008. Numerous new cases of coronary heart diseases can be a heavy burden not only to our healthcare system, but also to the society. Therefore, World Heart Day provides an excellent opportunity to remind each and every one of us to be responsible for our own heart health, and to help us be aware of the risks involved in heart diseases and strokes.
Workplace wellness, with the slogan ‘I work with heart’ is the theme for World Heart Day this year. As we spend most of our time at work, the workplace is ideal to raise awareness on the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and to get heart health messages across. A heart-healthy workplace will benefit both employees and employers by improving health, productivity, as well as reducing medical and absenteeism costs.
With that in mind, the BiO-LiFE team had once again set off to spread heart-healthy messages to employees and staff of DKSH, in a roadshow held recently at their workplace in Petaling Jaya. Many staff participated in the event and enjoyed the activities offered by the Customer Health Advisory team such as bone density scan and eye screening test.
Besides that, many eager beavers also took the opportunity to share their heart-healthy resolutions on heart-shaped stickers pasted on a cut-out board for all to see. “I will not overindulge on Bak Kut Teh”, “I will quit smoking”, “I will exercise more regularly” and “I will not go drinking so often” were some of the resolutions committed by members of the staff. In addition, a product display booth was also set up, offering attractive discounts for the benefits of the staff.
This is certainly a good way to make one aware of the importance of heart health and we advise all workers out there to make a conscious effort in taking care of their health. Remember, ‘I work with heart’!
